今年も様々な映画が私たちを楽しませてくれましたが、来る2012年もまた新たなムービー・イヤーになりそうですよ。今回はその中でも特に時間をかけて製作されている注目の映画2本をご紹介します。まず1本目は、トム・クルーズ主演の映画、と言っても『ミッション：インポッシブル／ゴースト・プロトコル』ではありません、彼が長い間トレーニングを積んできたミュージカル『The Rock of Ages』（原題）です。2006年に製作され2009年にブロードウェイでヒットしたミュージカルを原作にしている本作には、トムを筆頭にアレック・ボールドウィン、キャサリン・ゼタ・ジョーンズ、メアリー・J・ブライジといった錚々たるハリウッド・スター、さらにリメイク版『フットルース』でヒロインを務めた若手注目女優、ジュリアン・ハフが出演。80年代半ば、田舎町からやってきた少女と若き青年がロサンゼルスで夢を追いかけていく姿を描いています。何と言っても見どころは“ロックンロール”の世界で、トムは誰もが憧れるカリスマ的ロックスター、ステイシー・ジャックスを演じています。また、ミュージカルはジャーニーにボン・ジョヴィ、スティクス、パット・ベネター、ポイズン、ツイスター・シスター、アジアなどなど、80年代の名曲の数々をフィーチャーしています。

トムはというと、ロックスターを演じるにあたり、歌とダンスを猛特訓。実際の“ロックスター”のステージで訓練するために、友人のミュージシャンのステージに実際に上がっては一緒に数曲を歌うほどの念の入れようでした。物語は至ってシンプルで、ハリウッドでの成功を夢見てカンザスからロサンゼルスに上京してきた女の子が、そこで飛びぬけた存在のロッカーと出会ったことをきっかけにセックス、ドラッグ、ロックンロールの世界に巻き込まれていく姿を描きます。そしてやがて、（麻薬常用者やホームレスなどが多く集まる）ロサンゼルスのサンセット大通りの“浄化”と“健全な生活”を推進するドイツ人開発業者の手により、彼女たちの生活と住む場所は脅かされていきます。先日、本作の予告編がインターネット上で公開されたばかりですが、とても面白そうな内容でした。トムも見事にスーパー・ロックスターに成りきっていて素晴らしかったです！　個人的にはこの映画、大ヒットするのではと思いますが、どうでしょう？　全米では、2012年6月1日から劇場公開されます。

さて、もう1本ご紹介したいのが、長い間待望されていた不朽の名作映画であり傑作小説のリメイク『The Great Gatsby』（原題）です。こちらもレオナルド・ディカプリオ、キャリー・マリガン、トビー・マグワイアというハリウッドきってのドリームチームを結成しています。監督は『ムーラン・ルージュ』のバズ・ラーマンで、レオとは『ロミオ+ジュリエット』以来16年ぶりの再タッグとなります。レオはここ数か月、ニュージーランドとオーストラリアで本作の撮影に明け暮れていました（そして、撮影オフ時には数人の現地のブロンド美女と楽しんでいたよう）。

とにかく映画用に作られた本作のセットは見事で、キャストもそれに負けず良いコンビネーションを見せているようです。こちらのセットの写真が先日インターネットで公開されていましたが、その美しいこと！　知らない方のために補足すると、原作「グレート・ギャツビー」はアメリカの作家F・スコット・フィッツジェラルドが執筆し1925年に発行された小説で、第一次世界大戦後の1922年の春秋を舞台にしています。この名作は過去6回にもわたって、キャストを変えてリメイクされてきました。最初の映画化は1926年に製作されたサイレント映画ですが、最も有名なのは1974年製作のフランシス・フォード・コッポラ脚本、ミア・ファロー（デイジー・ブキャナン役）＆ロバート・レッドフォード（ジェイ・ギャツビー役）競演の『華麗なるギャツビー』でしょう。今回の映画化では、レオがギャツビー役に、キャリーがデイジー役に、そしてトビーがニック・キャラウェイ役に扮します。

COMING UP IN 2012...
Well, readers, can you believe that we are already headed into a new year??? Time just always seems to go faster and faster... or is it just me?

I have a feeling that 2012 will be another big year in movies...we have some feature films coming out that have been in the making for a long time...
such as the upcoming Tom Cruise film (and NO, I am NOT talking about "Mission Impossible-Ghost Protocol"). I am talking about the film that Tom Cruise has been training for quite a while now...the musical "The Rock of Ages". Now for all you readers that don't know about this film, it is based on the 2006 musical that hit Broadway in 2009, and stars a who's who in Hollywood, including Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mary J. blige, and the latest darling in Hollywood, Julianne Hough (who was recently the lead actress in the remake of the 80's classic, "Footloose").

"The Rock of Ages" takes place in the mid-80's and is the story of a smalltown girl and a young man who follow their dreams to Los Angeles. It is there that they get caught up in the world of "rock and roll". Tom Cruise plays the mega rock superstar, Stacee Jaxx, who everyone idolizes. The musical features some of the best music from the 80's, including hits from Journey, Bon Jovi, Styx, Pat Benatar, Poison, Twister Sister, and Asia. How's THAT for 80's music???? haha...

Anyway, Tom Cruise has been training, both in dancing, and singing in order to get ready for this role. In fact, while training for the role, Tom Cruise has been known to make appearances at some of his celebrity musician friends, sharing the stage with them for a number or two, in order to "get the rockstar stage training". The story is actually quite simple...it is about a smalltown girl from Kansas who arrives in Los Angeles, hoping to make big in Hollywood. She meets an aspiring rocker, and somehow they get entangled in the world of "sex drugs, and rock-n-roll", and they have to help defend the lifestyle and the world famous Sunset Strip area, from German land developers who have decided that they want to "clean up" the area and introduce "clean living". The trailer for the film, which was just leaked on the internet, is pretty interesting. And Tom Cruise seems to REALLY take on the whole rock superstar roll brilliantly!!! I have a feeling that this film will be a huge hit! It will be hitting theaters here in the US June 1, 2012.

Another film that is due to hit theaters next year is the long-awaited remake of the classic film and book, "The Great Gatsby", featuring a Hollywood dream team of Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey McGuire. And the film is being directed by Moulin Rouge's Baz Luhrmann, who is being reunited with DiCaprio after working together on the remake of another classic film "Rome + Juliet" 16 years ago. Leonardo has been busy filming "The Great Gatsby" in New Zealand/Australia for the past couple months (and during his off time has been seen running around with quite a few of the local "hot blondes" ).

Anyway, it seems that the chemistry on the set of the film is pretty incredible and the cast are all getting along very well. The first pictures from the set have come up online, and things are definitely looking pretty good! Now for those of you that don't know..."The Great Gatsby" is based on a novel by great American author F. Scott Fitzgerald, which was published in 1925. The novel takes place right after the first World War, from spring to the fall season of 1922. This film has been done SIX times already, all by different casts, of course. The original film was shot in 1926 as a silent movie. And probably the most famous one was done in 1974, with the script written by Francis Ford Coppolla, Mia Farrow as Daisy Buchanan, and Robert Redford as Gatsby. For this film, Jay Gatsby will be played by Leonardo DiCaprio, Daisy Buchanan by Carey Mulligan, and Nick Carraway by Tobey McGuire. What do you think? Are you excited about these two films?
