2005年にはメンタルヘルスの問題を抱えながらもアーティストとして魅了し続けるジョンストンを追ったドキュメンタリー映画『悪魔とダニエル・ジョンストン』が製作された。この作品を監督したジェフ・フォイヤージークは、サンダンス映画祭でドキュメンタリー部門の監督賞を受賞。ダニエルの訃報を聞き、「Billboard」に「ぼくは大丈夫。たくさんのメールが届いているよ。この日がいつかくるとは思っていた。20年くらい考えていたよ。彼の状態は長い間よくなかったからね」、「すごく悲しい。でも、ずいぶん前に彼の才能が世界に伝わったからよかった」と語っている。
